Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in September 1985 with a view to widen access to higher education to larger segments of the population. Initially the target groups were women, physically challenged and people living in backward regions and hilly areas such as North East, Kalahandi-Bolangir Korapur and those predominantly inhabited by tribals and SCs. With due course of time, this university has become the largest education centre of the world in terms of number of students enroll every year.

IGNOU is responsible for the promotion of Open University and Distance Education System in the education pattern of the country. It provides an innovative system for tertiary education and training. The system is flexible and open in regard to methods and pace of learning, combination of courses, eligibility for enrolment, age of entry, method of evaluation etc.

Proposal to rise it to 40 Radio stations is in the fray.

The launch of an exclusive educational satellite Edusat is a giant step in the education sector in India. The university established 100 Edusat supported Satellite Interactive Terminals in the regional study centres all over the country.
